What is
Scalp Micropigmentation?
Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is a cosmetic treatment for thinning hair or hair loss. It’s sometimes also called a hair tattoo. A provider uses thin, small needles to deposit tiny dots of pigment (color) on the scalp. These dots give the appearance of thicker hair. Scalp micropigmentation pigments are cosmetic-grade, permanent inks.
When a skilled technician performs scalp micropigmentation, it can hide thinning areas on your scalp. It may also hide birthmarks or scars. The treatment can also give the illusion of having shaved hair or a “buzz cut” on people who are bald. Scalp micropigmentation is noninvasive and doesn’t require surgery or anesthesia.

How is the procedure performed?
This treatment involves placing microdot tattoos in the outer layer of the skin. This stippling pattern gives the effect of hair follicles. It looks like you have cut your hair close to the scalp.
Similar techniques introduce colors into scars allowing them to blend with your scalp. The artist chooses colors that closely match your natural skin tone.
These procedures involve a high level of detail. Depending on the extent of the micropigmentation needed, it can take 4 to 5 hours. Often, individuals choose to have this completed over 2 to 3 sessions.
How much does it cost?
The cost of your procedure varies from person to person. It dependson how many hours of session time are needed, the level of your hair loss, etc. As well as if it is necessary to create a new hairline, the amount of density, scarring, and alopecia.
For example, a client with thinning hair on top and/or a receding hairline, can expect to pay between $2,000+. The price is likely to be reduced if your hair loss is less severe, or need a slight reconstruction of your hairline, you might expect to pay between $1,500-$2,500. The price will increase if you have advanced hair loss, scars to conceal, or alopecia to camouflage.

How long does it last?
SMP is considered a permanent treatment and can last for up to 6 years or more depending on how the procedure was performed and how it’s taken care of in the following years. Micropigmentation can usually start to lighten after 4 to 6 years, requiring a touchup.
To get the best results, scalp micropigmentation is done over 2 to 3 sessions with 10 to 14 days in between each session. The first session’s results will be a good gauge of how well the micropigmentation is retained. However, some fading after the first session is normal. The second and third sessions will help create more density and fullness to ensure the SMP lasts for many years.
